Drawing Classes and Workshops

Well hello! I'm Jen and I am a figurative artist based in Fife, Scotland. Drawing humans is a deep part of my own practice as an artist, as I am fascinated by the beauty, the truth and the diversity of the human body and the universe it contains. I share this enthusiasm with anyone who will listen and I love to teach and draw along with my students, as my practice grows, so does theirs.

As part of my practice, alongside creating my own work and commissions, I share my knowledge and  experience as a life drawing tutor at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and I host classes and workshops from my own studio in Ladybank, Fife.

About

The Artist

My work explores humanity's connection with nature. I creates meditative detailed drawings of the figure in and as nature itself; bodies become landscapes, erupting from the undergrowth, , a woman's reaching body becomes a tree, or the Artist's face emerges from the chaos of plants, struck by the awe of the natural world, all inhabiting the vibrant and relentless power of nature. My work is often described as poetic, visceral, and moving.  I work mainly in graphite, pastels and oil paint.

The Tutor

I have been a tutor since 2011, sharing my love of creation with anyone who will listen! I have taught extensively, with humans of all ages, including retired secret creatives who always dreamed of becoming an artist, young folk applying to art school and little tootie toddlers who can teach us all about having no fear when it comes to play and art!  I have worked in partnership with universities, colleges, museums, art societies and lead community art projects, ran my own kids classes, set up an online life drawing course during lockdown in partnership with my friend and fellow artist Kirsty Whiten and taught private art lessons to all in my studio. I am originally from Dundee, and I graduated in 2004 from Duncan of Jordanstone College graduate and I am currently a life drawing tutor at the DJCAD with ACES for young folks who are applying to art school and a life drawing tutor for undergraduate students studying Illustration and Animation.

What Classes and Workshops are offered?

Weekly Life Drawing Classes

Evening figure drawing classes providing the opportunity to draw an unclothed live sitter. Each class will feature a different model, with live demonstrations of the fundamentals of life drawing, including the flexibility of charcoal, approaching colour with pastels, measuring and proportions and line drawing.

Life Drawing Day

A full day of life drawing, beginning with quick poses, slowly increasing in time over the day and ending with a fifty minute longer pose. This class is especially good for complete beginners, as it provides an excellent introduction to the practice for life drawing and can prepare you for untutored classes.

Long Pose

This class is a chance to make more in depth drawings, as our model will hold the same pose for a full day. Bring any materials you choose and I'll be on hand to offer demos, advice and support.

Living Portrait

A chance to practice drawing a portrait from life. Bring any materials you like and do your own thing or bring the basics and be guided by me.

I would highly recommend them''

Jude, Class participant

LADYBANK STUDIO

Where are the classes held?

Classes and workshops are held in my garden studio, which is situated in the lovely wee village of Ladybank in Fife. Ladybank is about fifteen minutes from Cupar or Glenrothes, or a half hour drive from Dundee. It has good transport links with a railway station and bus routes to major cities and local villages like St Andrews and Edinburgh.
